In 2012 Ubisoft showed a demo that made people genuinely wonder whether Rockstar had a real competitor. Fourteen years later the answer arrived in the most Ubisoft way possible: three games, three cities, a huge amount of interesting ideas, and a franchise that has gone quiet. GTA 6 vs Watch Dogs is worth doing anyway, because Watch Dogs is the closest anyone came to attacking GTA from a direction Rockstar was not looking.

The Three Games, Briefly

Watch Dogs (2014) put you in Chicago as Aiden Pearce with a phone that could hack the city: traffic lights, bridges, steam pipes, security cameras, other people's bank accounts. It sold extremely well and was received as a good game that was not the game the 2012 demo had promised.

Watch Dogs 2 (2016) moved to San Francisco, swapped the grim revenge story for a hacker collective with a sense of humour, and fixed most of the first game's tonal problems. It is the one people defend.

Watch Dogs: Legion (2020) went to a near-future London and staked everything on a recruitment system where any NPC on the street could become a playable character with their own stats and voice. It was ambitious in a way almost nothing else that year was, and it is also where the series stopped.

What Watch Dogs Genuinely Beat GTA At

Give credit honestly, because there are three things here.

The city as a system rather than a stage. In Watch Dogs, the urban furniture was interactive: junction boxes, cameras, traffic signals, lifting bridges. GTA cities are magnificent to look at and largely inert to touch. Rockstar's confirmed 700+ enterable interiors in GTA 6 is an answer to a related complaint but it is a different answer: more places to go in, not more things to manipulate.

Non-lethal as a real playstyle. Watch Dogs let you complete substantial content without killing, using distraction, environmental hacks and takedowns. GTA has flirted with this. Interestingly, GTA 6's confirmed toolkit includes zip ties and human shields, which are non-lethal control options, and the community has spent months on non-lethal escape reads. That is a direction Watch Dogs got to first.

The phone as a genuine gameplay object. Ubisoft built its whole identity on the device in your hand. GTA 6 has a confirmed in-world phone with its own systems, covered in our phone breakdown, and the shift from menu-phone to object-phone is a meaningful one.

Where It Fell Apart

Density of consequence. Watch Dogs' cities reacted to hacks and barely reacted to you. Police response was functional; witnesses, reputation and the sense that the world remembered anything were thin. GTA 6's confirmed six-star wanted system, described as smarter, and whatever sits behind the leak-sourced talk of a criminal profile system are aimed squarely at this gap. Note that the profile system material is leak-sourced and unconfirmed.

Driving. This is not close. Watch Dogs handling was serviceable at best across all three games, and for a genre where you spend half your time in a car that is a structural problem. Rockstar's driving model is the series' single most refined system.

Characters. Aiden Pearce is the most widely disliked protagonist of the generation. Legion's answer was to remove protagonists entirely, which solved the problem by deleting it and cost the games their only chance at a story anyone would remember. GTA 6's whole pitch is the opposite: two named leads with a confirmed Bonnie and Clyde framing, which we get into on Jason and Lucia.

Tone discipline. Watch Dogs changed register completely every game: grim, then jokey, then dystopian-with-a-cockney-AI. Rockstar has held one voice, satire delivered straight, across two decades, which is the argument in our satire piece.

The Legion Lesson Rockstar Already Learned

Legion's play-as-anyone system is the most interesting failed idea in the genre. Every recruit was playable, and because every recruit was playable, none of them could carry a scene. Procedural voice lines cannot do a character arc.

Rockstar reached the opposite conclusion and, per reporting, considered going wider before pulling back. Our why two protagonists and not four piece covers that. Two leads is the version where performance capture, written dialogue and a real relationship all still work. Legion is the strongest available argument that they were right.

Does Watch Dogs Still Matter as a Comparison?

Yes, for one reason: it is the only major series that tried to beat GTA on systems rather than on tone. Saints Row went sillier. Sleeping Dogs went tighter and smaller. Mafia went period. Watch Dogs said the city itself should be the toy, which is a real idea, and the fact that it did not land does not make it wrong. For the fuller field, see our open-world crime rivals rundown and our Saints Row and Sleeping Dogs comparison.

If GTA 6's Leonida turns out to be reactive as well as detailed, Watch Dogs will have been the game that pointed at the target.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a new Watch Dogs in development?

Nothing has been announced. The last entry, Watch Dogs: Legion, launched in 2020 and Ubisoft has confirmed no successor. Treat any sequel talk as rumour.

Does GTA 6 have hacking?

No hacking system has been announced. GTA 6 has a confirmed in-world phone with its own systems, but Rockstar has described no hacking mechanic.

Which Watch Dogs is the best one?

Critical and community consensus generally lands on Watch Dogs 2 for its tone and traversal, with Legion admired for ambition and criticised for its lack of a central character.

Can Watch Dogs compete with GTA 6?

Not as things stand. The series is dormant, and GTA 6 releases November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S with no PC version announced.

The Bottom Line

Watch Dogs was the best-aimed shot anyone took at Rockstar and it missed for reasons that had nothing to do with ambition: weak driving, a protagonist problem it never solved, and a world that was clever to manipulate but did not care what you did. GTA 6's confirmed feature set reads like a game built by a studio that knows exactly which of those complaints apply to it too. For the comparison that matters most, start with GTA 6 vs GTA 5.
